2011-2012 Coaching Staff

Mike O’Neill – Coach Mike is in his sixth year coaching for SHC, he is the head coach and coach of the boy’s varsity program. Mike has a thirty year history with the sport of rowing. He was introduced to the sport when he attended Tabor Academy and rowed to a second place finish at the NEIRA championships his senior year. After college Mike started a company building rowing shells and continued competing in single sculls at the club and recreation level. Mike has contributed many innovations to the sport of rowing, including the wing rigging system used on many new boats. In addition to coaching, Mike maintains our fleet of rowing shells and chase boats.

Sarah Buck – This is Sarah’s 4th year with the program. She is the Girls Head Coach focusing on the Girls 1st & 2nd Varsity. Sarah is a 2001 graduate of SHS and an SHS Crew Alumnus. She rowed for 3 years at URI and brings her enthusiasm for the sport and a wealth of knowledge on rowing technique and conditioning.

Candice Webb - Candice (SHS '06, Drexel '10) rowed for Drexel University. She was stroke of the Varsity 8 for for three years, finishing her college career with a win at the Women's Henley in England, 2010. We are excited that Candice joined the SHS Crew coaching team last year as the Girl's Novice coach and is returning for the 2011-2012 season. She also was is the primary coach for the Mystic YMCA Summer rowing camps.

Ken Godfrey – Ken is the former Head Coach of SHS Crew and continues to support the program as a volunteer coach, mentor, and consultant. Last year he focused on the development of the younger rowers in 3rd Varsity and Novice boats. For the 2011 season he, and Alice Socia, will be coaching the Girl's and Boy's 3rd boats. Ken continues to support the CT Public Schools Rowing Assoc. which sponsors the CT State Championships.

Alice Soscia – Alice had coached at SHS under Ken Godfrey and Mike Nowak in 1999 and returned in 2010 to work with the Boys V3 and novice boats. Alice rowed for the University of Tampa 4 years and was in the 1987 US Rowing Assoc. Southeastern Crew of the Year She was the ‘87 Woman’s Collegiate Lightweight National Champions, invited to the Pan American games in Yugoslavia, inducted into the University of Tampa Hall of Fame, undefeated Florida State Champion and Dad Vail Regatta Champion. This season she will be concentrating on the V3 boats with Ken.

Ed Bockowski - Ed coached soccer in Stonington for 10 +/- years and after observing two years of the rowing rec program, decided to come on board and work under Mike’s tutelage last year with the V1 & V2 boys. Ed has great enthusiasm and a willingness to learn which he passes onto the team. He is now the Assistant Varsity Coach.
