What is Crew?
Crew, or Rowing, is a sport that was once only available to students at Ivy League colleges and a handful of prep-schools. The sport of rowing has grown from its elite beginnings into a mainstream sport with many High Schools, Universities, and Colleges competing in national events. Rowing has gained in popularity due to its unique combination of physical benefits and its ulimate form of teamwork. In crew, everything relies on the team pulling together as one.
The Stonington High School (SHS) Crew was formed in 1997. It has grown over the past 12 years from a small club program into a varsity sport with participation by 60-70 SHS athletes per year. The competitive season is during the Spring.
Now going into its 13th year, the SHS Crew has been highly successful, generally placing in the top five at the Connecticut State Championships each year and having several boats qualify for the New England Championships at the end of each season.
